Take a chance: Stepping out side of your comfort zone in college

College is a time to learn about yourself
When choosing what secondary education is most fit for you, there are other heavy weighted factors that need to be considered. I am from a very small town in New Jersey, and when it was my time to attend college I knew I wanted a big school. I found Penn State to be my home.
As an incoming freshman three years ago, I could have never imagined what I have accomplished this far and the impact I could have on other lives. More so how, others could impact my life. It was terrifying, graduating with the same 135 students I began Kindergarten with and jumping to a campus with 46,000 students. It was a good intimidation. I knew this would be my time to strive for my goals.
Coming to Penn State, I did not know one single person on campus. I had met my roomate on Facebook and we agreed to live together (luckily I can say she is now one of my best friends and we have lived together these past three years and will again for our senior year)! She truly changed the perspective I had attending a school this big.

I would not allow myself to sit in my room, alone, swallowed in pity for myself. I forced myself to step outside my comfort zone and to take a risk to meet others.
The first step I took was joining a THON Committee. THON is a student run philanthropy here at Penn State. There is a 46 hour no sitting or sleeping dance marathon every year near the end of February. Each year we have raised tens of millions of dollars to donate to children and families with pediatric cancer.
I am now in my third year of being involved with a committee and currently serve as an Administrative Assistant. Not only has THON opened plenty of doors and opportunities, it has allowed me to make Penn State feel like home. I am astounded every year by meeting people who have the same drive and motivation I do. THON has completely changed my college experience for the better.
Another way I am involved here at Penn State is through my sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha. I have met the most amazing people, and some of my best friends through this organization. I serve at Assistant Treasurer and Corporate Chair. Our organization, paired with the fraternity Alpha Tau Omega, has been the top fundrasiers at THON for the past 25 years. Last year we raised $291,000!

After my quick ramble of my involvement there is a point to this all. It is hard to take that first step, especially going to college and being out of your comfort zone. After reading my blurb, let this serve as your motivation to take a chance on something you have been debating on doing. The secret I cannot stress enough is the outcome of your risk taking will be the most rewarding feeling.
I have completely and first handly been able to impact others lives in such a positive light. Knowing I can give back to others is something I am extremely passionate about.
College is scary. Moving away from home is scary. My best advice is take that chance, allow your new surroundings to lead you down the path your are best fit for. Create your new home, in the new point of your life where you are at right now. You are right where you should be.
